Hey, good luck on this project just a few things to point out-
For a start i would recomend you do lots of research on planted tanks. You may want to look around a little on
this link for basic ideas. Once you've decided your basic plan, you can fine tune it a bit. Some thing to think about-
- Substrate. Personally I would choose a plant-friendly substrate such as fluorite, then add a more aesthetic substrate over that, such as dried oak leaves or smooth/tumbled rocks.
- Background. If the tank is heavily planted enough, you may not even want to worry about a background, but it will take a while for the plants to completely cover it. You can look around for a good 3-D background, make one yourself, paint a background, or use a pre-made sheet background.
- Lighting. You'll want to buy lighting according to the plants you choose. You may also want to consider using actinic light, moonlights, etc.
- Plants. Since this is a planted tank, you'll need plants. Their are some stickies in the planted section about different plants,
this link also has a list of a bunch of plants. You'll want to decide on a foreground, mid-area, and background plant type. It will make for an interesting tank to use different colored plants, such as red ludwiga, etc. Another interesting technique is to get dried fern and paint it to a desirable color, make sure whatever you use to paint it with won't wash off or hurt your fish.
- Filtration/Co2. As for filtration, you'll want something easily concealable but also effeciant. Eheim's classic canister filters would be my first choice. As for a Co2 system, this will require some research on your part. Some people don't use any at all with good results, others swear buy it. Again, this is up to you. You may want to consider a UV bulb, if your willing to spend the extra dollars. This will make your water clear and remove unwanted algae.
Hope this helps.
