Hi Guys,

I'm a noob here :(, been reading all the threads on sumps and filtration to get an idea of how to set it up for a new project I want to start up (my baby Jack Dempsey will need a bigger home soon :)). I have make a sketch from all the info I found around on the site on over flows and sumps and im just looking for someone to see if I missed something or where I can improve the design..

the main thing I'm struggling with is what area is needed for the bioballs and for the filter sock. I thought i would put my pump out side the sump to give me more space, is that needed?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Make sure the pump you use does not have to be submerged as many are.

i dont see a problom go for it (you do need valves)

Thanks for the suggestion, I have purchased a ball valve for the overflow to control that side of the system. Still need to plumb it all together

Will do, the one in my diagram is specified to be submersible or un-submerged, but I have changed my whole sump setup so I got one that can sit inside the sump. Going to be using a plastic container. Will post some pics…

Add some bubble bars under the bio balls and plumb them into an air pump. This will insure a constant supply of clean oxygen rich air percolating up through the bio balls while the water is percolating down.

Now this I will defiantly do, thanks for the tip!
