Alright so I'm gonna be helping build a stand for a friends 55 Gallon

It would be better for the top pieces to be sitting on top of the vertical uprights. Also, you really don't need the pieces in the middle, if it makes you feel better you can put a middle singe vertical piece on the long side, but have the top and bottom pieces sit on top. If you look in my sigs it will give you the ideal what i'm talking about. Good luck and enjoy building them, i do.
