Yes, most upper jaws can be kept in there:
Senegal, Delhezi, Palmas sp., Retropinnis, and also ropefish. You could also keep Mokelembembe, but it's not nearly as available as the others.
 
No, they don't need to be in pairs, but they usually appreciate the company of other similar sized bichirs. They will show you by piling on top of eack other, and just hanging around the same general area.

They can be kept alone though, too.

well i got 4 pictus i dont wanna over stock the 55 gallon. i would get the bichir a buddy if i could. also they would live in the tank for life

If I was op, I'd get a senegal and a delhezi, as you say you don't want that many fish.
But you could still have some top or mid level fish.
African Butterfly fish are really cool.

just dont wanna make it 2 cramp or anything but a bichir is next on my list as soon as i find more info about them = D
