i'm about to buy a 58g Oceanic tank for my FH. he doesn't need it now, but will in the future.

- what do you think about the tank for my single FH? currently plan for the tank being filtered by both eheim 2215 and 2213.

- what do you guys think about this deal I'm getting tomorrow: the tank + matching wood stand + nice light + eheim 2213 without media for $125?

Great funking deal man!
I keep both my guys in 64gal oceanic seamless tanks. I got threads somewhere around here showing them off, They are beauties haha.

Good deal not a good tank to keep a flowerhorn in long term though.

i knew someone would chime in with this. and thanks for that. lol

studd: just got it home last night. LOVE IT! thanks to my poor wife, who had to help me carry it out of the van. she's only 5' and 102 lbs! i'm not that strong to lift the whole thing myself. little dusty but in perfect condition.

cam: i'm sure that you knew the dimensions of the 58g that i just got when you made that "right information" comment. and i know a lot of people here usually recommend 75g for a FH. but how do you (and others) come up with the "right" tank dimensions and volume for a flowerhorn? obviously, bigger is always better, but where do you draw the line? in arowana world, people tend to do 3xfish_length for the length of the tank and 1x for the depth/width. not sure how that's done in FH world. swimming position and body shape of FH's are very different from those of arowanas so i don't think the length of the tank needs to be 4'.

Agree. I dont suggest anything under a 75 for an adult flowerhorn. Seems like adequate sized space for a 12in fish.

And good luck trying to convince me that my Kamfa or ZZ is cramped/stunted/ unhappy in a 64 gal.
With a single fish its all about the footprint.

Seeing the Oceanic's standard 58 gallon tanks have a 36x18 footprint, I made the same assumption as Cam, and agree with him 100%.

Can you keep a 12" (or larger) FH in that tank for life, yes.
Should you? IMO, no. I notice a huge behavioural change when my juvies go from a 36x18, to 48x18, or 72x18 tanks. Water quality is easier to maintain in a larger tank, and in my experience the fish always seem to do better.

Same applies to adult aros, and even juvie aros for that matter. A buddy of mine in town imports Asian aros from Singapore, and the more room the fish have to spead their wings, the better they do. Small tanks often make big fish sketchy & nervous.
