I was wondering if i got a instant ocean 5g bucket with twist on lid if it would be used as a cheap canister for my outdoor pond. its a very small pond, has goldfish for my niece and nephew to look at. i was going to drill two holes and put in two bulk heads, and hook up a decent water pump, fill the bucket with filter floss and lava rock for bio

It will work if you can get a pressure seal on it. If the bucket is free get one and put one bulkhead connector in and with the top on pressurize it with the garden hose (not to much as it will blow out at full pressure).

I get 6g buckets for pool chlorine, they have a screw on lid (but they are probably scarce in your neck of the woods).

Anything wrong with a gravity return filter?
