For whatever reason i found this particularly entertaining. LFS in atlanta, ga area. All the other hundreds of fish in the store had relatively "decent" sized enclosures. Ive never kept african lake cichlids, can someone explain this to me?

That looks like an old Father Fish trick; it's a nitrate farm, allowing him to produce nitrate in high quantities for topping up his other tanks...

Lol you cant beat good ol medieval science!
I'm not experienced in African Cichlid but have read about people crowding the aquarium to keep aggression down. Also most setup all male aquariums.
Ah i see maybe some genius employee got all the males together in one tank. I wish i could rename the thread to "5g sausage party tank"
Joking aside, I bet that someone brought all those fish in on trade or to just give away, and they were placed together temporarily for observation or perhaps just until it was decided where to distribute them; maybe by an employee who wasn't authorized to do anything else with them until the boss sees them. You just happened to come in during that short time period.
