My boss's tank at work is going through a major change. I am the one that is doing it :) . It's been years since I have messed with a reef. (well a serious one anyway)..... 6.7-6.8 watts per gallon (remember the 125 isn't a 125 :) should be plenty I assume? Coral Life Aqualight pro with the 3x150s and 4 96watts.
I am in bit of a rush on this. The boss never likes to wait for anything. I will keep researching, but any quick replies would help a lot.
Going for soft and stony coral, anemones, ect.

BTW, the tank needs to be minimal maint. for a reef anyway, and do you guys think that much light will have any algae problems if phosphates kept in check?

The WPG rule does not make any difference in SW because each inhabitant has its own specific lighting needs....You need to check on the stock and research their lighting requirements before making it firm that your lighting is sufficient.

The only minimal maintenance sw tanks are Fish-Only..Reefs require a fair ammount of attention and care...

The ammount of lighting wont have an effect on elevated nutrients creating plague algae, bad bulb will though...

Thx Reefscape........... Everything will be researched before I stock. I am just trying to get a avg. answer for an avg. question. (or basic I guess).. I realize with todays more modern lighting that WPG doesn't really apply anymore. I am mostly concerned about hmmmm, example... I get a nice little carpet anemone and have it perched nicely up on top of the rocks. Suddenly it gets aggravated with the "current" and choose' to move, falls to the bottom on the sand... Do you think there would be enough lightning for something like that? Standard size 125 which I think is 24" high....I don't know how much research I can do on anemones falling off the top, I just want to make sure I have enough lighting for for odd situations. I have a little nano type reef at my house and I don't really have to do anything to it except add some solutions here and there and keep an eye on my phosphates. I plan to get pretty serious with this tank, although I don't want to take off for a few days to come back and see mass carnage. I don't want to boil the water either (I will not be putting a chiller on this thing). I realize also that beginners would probably be better off with a lot more light, as an expert can get away with minimal. I am by far no expert!!

Thanks, I am scared about running into a heating problem also if I go any bigger. This will be run without a canopy. Anyone think on a 125 that running 3-250 watt with 4 - 96 watters would get too hot without a chiller?

Sorry I know I don't have any specific questions and I guess I don't want basic answers lol, just trying to convert this thing as quickly as possible to ensure my "boss" remains happy.... The kind of person that wants something done a week ago and gives you an hours notice 2 weeks later.

just make sure you have a good clean up crew NO HERMIT's or Crabs they do not eat algae at all only as a last resort they are opportunistic feeders meaning they'll eat snail's bite your octocorals nip at fish if they are perched or on the substrate. The lighting should be around 5-6 watts a gallon for any of you SPS. The octocorals have no real lighting requirement's But if you do a anemone add it first so it can settle and not move around so much or it will sting your corals.

To be brutally honest, i dont see why you would need the 4 x 96 watts when you are running 3 x 250w lamp units..them 3 on their own will give you great coverage when it comes to meeting lighting requirements..
