Heres the deal, a relative of mine bought a standard 6foot tank. I started a new craze in the family of having fish, with me having a 4foot tank with an RD in it. So I dont want this tank to get "wasted" by them putting lame fish in it. What would you guys suggest to be stocked in a 6foot tank so I can try and convince them not to just fill it with discus or other lame ass fish.

Thanks.

stocking a tank really depends on what kind of fish your into, i'm personally into parachromis, and amphilophus genus's, so i'd probably stock it with a breeding pair of wild midas or trimacs- wild so i could tell they were purebred, i personally don't like buying hybridized fish when i want purebreds, so i never buy from lfs's etc, but now i'm just rambleing into another subject so, what are you into?

ummm it seems that you already want aggressive fish inside, if that's what you define as un-'lame'

discus could be really cool and have nice peaceful personalities. but given your relative's lack of experience, they might want to stick to easier stuff like Jags, Oscars, JDs, GTs

Probably should have been more clear...

I want to convince them into getting SA cichlids. AKA RD's, jags, oscars, GTs and so on.

Just wondering which mix would be the best for a 6 foot tank.

When you say 6' tank, what size is it really? A 125, 135, 150, 180, 215 or other. There's many different widths and heights which makes a difference on what to recommend.

Since they are beginners, Jags would be a great start. :) They are beautiful and really tough to kill, lol. Or you can convince them to get a pair of red terrors or a dovii. :) If they want that peaceful community tank . . . then tell them to get some angel fish and rams, seeing as they are more hardy than discus are.

I would go for 1 dovii that is of course depending on the width and height of the tank. If its a 180 or higher I would def. get a dovii. Otherwise some Jags would be cool.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, Im going home this weekend(YES UNI BREAK!) and Ill have a look at the dimensions of the tank. I would <3 for them to get a dovii but I think they want "pretty" community fish :screwy: I wish I could trade them my 4foot 75Gal for their 6ft, then my RD could have some friends. Arwell, Ill size up the tank this weekend and post the gallonage then.

might have friends i've seen RD claim a 6 foot tank but i've also seen many in the same tank but i'd go with some kind of cichlid to if they wan't color get a male jack dempsy and you will awe its color for the dovii if you wan't a single fish then mabye it would have to be a female males get way to big for any 6 foot tank unless it was wider the 28'' or so then proubly might not work for a breeding pair but find out what they wan't and you'll find cichlids that are right for you theres plenty
