I'm planning to have a sump tank built, the dimension would be 6 x 2 x 18 inches. was reading standard for glass thickness and found that the height of the tank is what is used to determine the thickness of glass?
since my sump would only be 18 inches high, and i think it will only be filled upto max of 3/4 of 18 inch, will 1/4 inch glass do? i'll just ask the tankmaker to add more braces?

since the price of 3/8 glass is 2 to 3 times the price of 1/4 inch?

1/4" glass would work with tons of bracing, but I would strongly recommend using 3/8" glass

You would need;
For 1/4"

1 - 72" x 24"
2 - 72" x 17 3/4"
2 - 23 1/2" x 17 3/4"

for 3/8"

1 - 72" x 24"
2 - 72" x 17 5/8"
2 - 23 1/4" x 17 5/8"

thanks. I've read that the chambers will serve as bracing for the front and back of the tank. I'll be adding braces along the base of the front and back and sides of the tank.
btw whats your experience with DIY aquarium? is it hard to DIY?
also i've been reading instructions from the net but when do i put the silicon where the side glass join the front and back panel?

I had 72 x 18 x 18 which used 1/4 inch thick glass, it had three braces on top. Since its a sump I reckon it would have chambers, this would then strenthen the tank. 1/4 inch glass should work
