Back in early Feb, I found this @ 3ft log on shore after a storm.
Don't know how long it had been in the Pacific.
Dropped it in my 180 and let it float.

Above a shot from mid Feb.
About 2 days ago one side started to sink.

Pleco started munching immediately

This morning the entire stick has dropped to the bottom, surprised it became water logged to quickly.

It sank quickly because you threw it in, let nature take its course, and didn't fret about it.

If you had been watching it constantly, boiling it, sterilizing it, tying it to rocks, screwing chunks of slate to it, and generally letting it drive you crazy...it would float for between 5 and 10 years...:)

ps. Release of tannins works along those same principles as well.

You may have hit the nail on the head.

I just checked a chunk of wood that I have had soaking in a Rubbermaid plastic garbage can in my basement since last September. Removed the concrete block that was holding it down, and sure enough it came lurching to the surface like an unconscious whale. Good thing I'm patient...which translates into "I quickly forget about these things until I stumble across them later while looking for something else"...:)
