Hello MFK ,Well our tank & fish have made it a whole six months without a major failure. The filtration system is keeping up (new cartridges every 2 weeks, gravel vac weekly) and water quality seem to be acceptable
(30 % water change weekly / Nitrates between 10 & 20 PPM , all other parameters normal). Temp steady at 78 degrees. Once we figured out we couldn't run the lights 12 hours a day our algae issues subsided.
We have lost 2 Rustys and one Obliquiden Zebra over the last 4 months, not all at once and seemingly unrelated.
Is this acceptable losses ?
There seems to be very little agression so far.Do you suppose the length of the tank (8') is responsible ?
They seem to be developing a cool game of follow the leader. Initially the Obliquiden Zebras would group together and make laps the length of the tank, as time has gone by the entire population has gotten in on it. At any given time a mixed group of 15 to 30 fish will be engaged in this.
The population seems happy and horny with many fish holding.
So far the Demasoni fry seem to be the most adept at surviving as we have a dozen plus survivors so far. We also have a couple of Rusty fry going strong as well as a few Obliquiden Zebras. I had not expected this many survivors so will soon have to come up with a plan for the new fish. I'm thinking I need to talk to my LFS, any ideas?
I'm thinking a Night cleaning crew might help keep the gravel clean.
Does anyone have ideas for suitable tankmates ? Syndontis? Plecos?
Thanks

Pics?????? :naughty:

I have about 40 fish in a 125 - lost a few over the past 2 years. Not sure why it just happens. Lost 1 outta 5 Aulonocara, 2 outta 6 victorians, and 1 mbuna. My "cleaning crew" is - a Rainbow Shark, Whip tail cat, Spotted Armored Rapheal cat, L018 gold nugget pleco, L034 medusa pleco, and a Red Tail Botia. Seems like you got everthing under control to me, esp. with so much breeding goin' on.....................now lets see them pics.

What kind of filtration are you using on this? 240 right?
Hi Mike, two 20 micron 2.5" x 10" cartridges plumbed in parallel fed by a hybrid 2' x 8' UGF (photo attached). I welcome comments, alternative suggestions and constructive criticism on this setup. My intention is to run this setup until spring and then evaluate its performance, maintenance cost/time. What do you think ?
Hi Otherone, thanks for the ideas for tankmates , I will check those out.

Looks good. You should certainly keep the tank how you like it, but here is what I might do if it were mine:

Add some more height to the decor with some large vertical rocks to encourage the fish to use the whole tank. I would also add more fish - I would increase the number of demasoni to 40, the number of yellow labs to 20, add a group of 12 syno multis, and also add 4 P. gibbiceps for algae control.

I'm not sure on your filtration system. It looks like you could add a larger biological filtration area, like maybe an inline DIY sump in a rubbermaid tote there on the floor under your 2 small canisters.
