I'm currently pricing a 10Lx4Wx2H tank for my new house but I have also requested a price for one that is 2.5H, if the price difference isn't too much I'll go for the taller tank. My question is, how long would it likely be before a RTC or TSN outgrew this tank? I've always wanted to keep one, especially a RTC and would look to rescue one from a small tank. Say I rescued a 12" fish, how long would I likely have?

I've never kept those, but a number of people have and some in the same size range of tanks. You can read the thread as you please.

They should be able to reach 4 feet or more, so obviously if they did, that tank would be too small long before then. But if it's kept in a tank that size, it will almost certainly never reach full size, because the conditions are not adequate. The width is the biggest problem I think.

It's very reasonable to think they can reach 2 feet within 24 months, but in the thread I linked, there were ones that reached that (and more) in only 12-18 months.

If you start at 12", as you asked, it would be far shorter.

After reading that thread I'll give it a miss, thanks.

I've heard that most TSN's in the hobby are actually culls from farms, and therefore, rarely reach more than 30". If this is the case then I think they will be just fine in the tank for life.

The RTC on the other hand, will outgrow the tank. It will probably not be comfortable in it in about 3-4 years.

I would skip the RTC and just get two TSN's.

im excited for you. i have no experience keeping giant cats but i would definitely put one of each of those in if i had a tank that size. but you probably want expert opinions. i just wanted to egg you on a little.

Red tails are awesome fish. 4ft wide tank should be fine they don't often reach full potential in home aquariums. Wider is always better in opion then hight. These guys are like dog, mine used to eat out of my hand and let me pet it. They will even bark to get your attention

That tank is borderline ok , barely adequate for an average runt TSN that we get in the hobby worldwide. They are culls from the farming operations and are underachievers of varying degree. Smaller-growing and shorter-lived, often deformed. Some fail to exceed 1.5' but most reach ~2' and some reach 2.5' after 3-5 years.

A 12" RTC would outgrow that tank in roughly 1 to 1.5 years, given proper care.

Both fish like to swim in proper enclosures. If most of the time, like all day long, your TSN and RTC lays around, it means to me that they have not space to swim. My guys love to swim and stretch in their 4500 gal.
