Hi I initially was looking for a 125 long in 72x18 to do as a mixed cichlid tank of sorts to house some tinfoils, blood parrot and rtgg. I would like to get some severums. However petsmart cannot order me the one they have for sale on there website and locally the cheapest price I am getting is 483.00 no lights just glass and lids.

There is a 120hi 60x18x24 for sale locally(not positive on height). glass, lids and lights for $369.00 I am considering. For what I plan to keep how much worse is this foot print ?

I wouldn't plan to keep any monsters in this tank just mixed 10-14inch semi-aggresive fish. maybe discus latter.

i would say it depends on the fish u plan to keep. eg. if it was an arowana id go with the longer tank. for discus taller would be better. same for cichlids.

The PetSmart near me in Philly has the 125L on sale for $303.99 and the 120H $278.99. Both include canopy and lights.

Both tanks have practically the same water volume. The extra depth of the 120G is a plus if you have a mix of fish that includes bottom and top dwellers. I have a 30" deep tank with a mix of Haps and Peacocks. Works out great as the Haps tend to hang near the top and the Peacocks near the bottom.

You say you don't plan to keep any monsters, but rtgg's can get 24"+, WAY too big for either tank you are looking at. I've also seen tinfoils get 14"+, and I dont think you could reasonably house a school of 14" fish in either.

Now to answer your question, I would go for the 72"x18", especially since you plan to house cichlids. They seem to like bigger footprints so they can each have their own territory.
