im getting opinions on glass or acrylic tanks. you could say that i like strong tanks, considering im about to start saltwater, and i would hate to see a tank break from a piece of rock hitting the glass. Also with glass, is it stronger then everybody makes it seem??

Yea. But if you have a big rock hit it, it will break. Acylic scratchs tho.

but you can buffer out acrylic and it's lighter.
but glass is less expensive,
but acrylic can be made into different shapes,

it's the age old question...
it really comes down to what you are looking for and how much you want to spend.

Do you have kids :D I want to kill mine... Not enough time to buff out acrylic everyday!!! And they haven't busted or scratched any of my glass tanks :)...

after having two glass tanks leak out on me; one when i came home after 4 in the morning from work i will have to say that i will only use acrylics from now on.

im aware that acrylic scratches and it can be buffed, but i was just wondering what everybody thinks for me, money aside lol. even if a small piece of rock hits it, will the forsure effect the glass in anyway. so far ive had one tank break on me, and that just had water in it, still not sure of the cause! other then that, no problems what so ever!

here's another point, my friend had a salt water tropical tank; 40g gorgeous, with corals and tangs. The tank was glass, brand new too. Set up for not even a year before the glass tank started leaking at the seams. He was MAD!!! Said only TRU-VU accrylics from now on. Also, at the good fish stores that i go to, all the salt water tanks are TRU-VU accrylics.

1.)Any tank acrylic or glass can leak(for acrylic just ask milkman, sorry milk just making a point neither are un-leakable)

2.) Glass can come in alot of different shapes too. I've seen glass half cylinders/bowfronts/etc. Unless you're thinking crazy shapes like making one in the outline of a dog or something.

3.) I've seen just as many cracked/leaky acrylics as I've seen cracked/leaky glass tanks.

4.)With salt-water I imagine you'll have some things attaching to the side/etc I wouldn't want acrylic for that. Not to mention salt leaves a residue when you empty the tank and trying to scrub to get that off an acrylic tank I would think would scratch it big time.

Just my opinion but unless it's huge like 400g+ go with glass. Scratches less easier/cheaper, etc. Acrylic is lighter but again with a salt tank I wouldn't want acrylic.

glass is way cheaper, and i like the look,
but when a big glass tank cracks for no reason it's terrible:(
It's so heavy tooo
ever notice how when you have to move big tanks all your friends have other plans?
for my giant tank i want to go with acrylic so i can put slidy things under it and move it (empty ) if I have to
but hmm I guess that if weight or money are non issues you can go with commercial quality glass?

My personal preference is glass as well. I would trade my 300 acrylic for a 265 glass any day. If I look at my acrylic tank wrong it scratches.

When it comes down to weight, once it's full of water it makes no difference at all. The only time weight matters is when you're moving it
