Am I creating too much of a flow using a 2217 on a 65g? Its going to be a cichlid tank. Also, should I be worrying about stock at all in terms of filtering capacity, or just tank size?

I've got a 2217 on a 75 gallon tank along with a powerhead and an AC110. I've got 2 oscars in the tank, I doubt the 2217 alone would create too much current for you it's a rather low gph IIRC it's 250-265 gph.

What kind of cichlids? Fish size certainly is a factor when getting a filter. But you need to have a tank with a large enough foot print as well.

I run 2217's on my 75's with a Emperor 400.

Eheim's are very good filters, but they aren't really known for being "high-flow" . . . in other words, I wouldn't worry about that aspect of it

if you stock your tank reasonably based on the tank size, you shouldn't need to worry about that filter . . .

Hey Matt,

^ as others have said don't sweat the flow. The 2217 is my favorite of the Eheim classics and a great filter. I used to run one on my old 46g and a 55g with no other filters besides the classic on each. Base your filtration around your stock not tank size or manufacturers recommentions. Base your stock arount tank footprint, especially with cichlids. Does that make sense? We talking africans or new world? GL
