Hello Folks,

Need your advice here,
currently i have a 67 gallon 4ft mostly malawi tank. OHF Filter 1650L

stock list as below:
3 Yellow labs mbuna (Malawi)
3 P.acei mbuna
1 Rusty mbuna
3 Manigano mbuna
1 Electric blue Hap

2 P.neyerri Hap (Victoria)
1 N.bichardi (Tan***ika)
1 Synodontis catfish (Tan***ika)
1 Tiretrack eel small 5inch (SE asia)

i wish to add one more odd looking Tan***ika cichild like ones below:
1) Callochromis macrops
2) Julidochromis regani
3) Altolamprologus calvus (Black)

which one above will be a better mix?
i really like Callochromis macrops, will it be able to mix with malawi?

thanks and have a nice day

I'm not crazy about mixing fish from the different lakes in Africa, but have seen it done. Of the three fish you listed to add to your tank, the calvus would probably work out the best. Provide a large shell or calvus cave and you should be fine. A pair of julies might also work. If you provide them with a cave, they will not stray too far. The callochromis macrops prefers a sandy bottom with open water. Tank may be too busy for that fish.
Eventually the tiretrack eel will get way to big for that tank.

hello joe

thanks for advice

comparing clavus and julies which one is easier to keep?
i know that clavus is very sensitive to water parameters and water changes and clavus are super slow growers and eaters

Are julies easier to maintain than clavus? and are julies super slow growers and eaters like clavus?
i notice tangs are very slow growers, my N.bichardi grows to only 2.5 inch while my yellow labs and P.acei already hitting 4-5 inches in 11months

as for C.macrops, i do have a large sandy patch in front of my tank for my haps to swim around. i was just worried that it is a slower grower and eaters like clavus.

for the tiretrack eel, i have the M.favus and not M.armatus which top out at 70cm instead of 90cm

i will only get 1 male tang of only one above and i intend to reduce my malawi numbers to only 1 male for each species.
i like the idea of all male tank to reduce aggression.

thanks joe

Calvus and julies are both easy to keep. Really no difference between them and most other tanganyikan cichlids. I've had no problems raising calvus, except for the fact that the fry take forever to grow. They readily eat flakes or pellets. Julies are my favorite african cichlid, but an adult black calvus is a stunning fish.

hi joe

yes adult black clavus is a stunning fish. but it is also very expensive.
i was afraid the malawi mbunas will bully it to death.

That is true, they most likely will be too robust and may bully the lake tanganyikans to death. I would suggest either going with lake tanganyikans or mbuna, but not both
