We'll be moving soon, so I'm taking the opportunity to replace my 125 PetSmart stand with a diy stand. I've built the stand below for a 4ft 55 and it's worked great for over a year. What changes would need to be made for it to work on a larger tank? I plan to make the green uprights even with the top edge of the red and yellow, also 2x6's for the top frame. A few more blue peices will tie it together and a few uprights between the top and bottom for support and to let me attach a removable front. The bottom and back will be covered with a sheet of plywood.

Is that a similar or the same template design from the reef forum?

If so, just replace the top frame with 2 x 6 instead of using 2 x 4's. You won't even need a front center support if you don't want one. I used this design for my 125G tank and it has held up very well.

For the bottom, try to make the inside bottom panel flush with the bottom framing as it makes sliding equipment such as sumps and canister much easier than trying to lift them over the lip.

heres my 6x2 stand i added a bit more support to the inner span than the illustration above but still left space for a 75 sump to fit in. used 3" deck screws throughout. unfortunately it has no tank on it now. just a workbench until i can get my big tank :(

Thank you both for the pics.

tlindsey tlindsey are your corner uprights 2x4's or 2x6's, the darker color makes it hard to see.

Backfromthedead Backfromthedead are those 2x6's for the inner span? Do you think 2x4's would work?

Sorry I somehow didn't see your post. I'm not sure where it originally came from, I copied the pic from one of the stickies above. The only reason for up and down supports was to have something to fasten a removable front. I was thinking of using magnets to hold the front on, then just pull them off when I need to work on the fx5 or 6.

i would say it depends on your supports. i opted for the 2x6 because i was leaving that 42" span with no supports. you can't see in the picture but i also shored up the 2x6 with a 2x4 for extra support in that area. i would say if you are 24" or less between supports you are good with 2x4s. thats not a technical figure just an educated guess by me.

I screwed on some plywood triangles in the face and end corners to prevent the stand from racking on mine.
