I have a 6x2x2 10mm glass tank with a cracked bottom pane.
I want to rebuild it and turn it into a 3 foot wide tank. A glazier can give some 10mm glass from a shop widow replacement and will cut it to size for me. I can get all the glass for free.
So it's a great opportunity to build great tank.
Is it possible?? A 6x3x2 in 10mm glass.
What say you MFK??

I assume so. People have made their own glass tanks from scratch before, which is effectively what you are doing. You just have the front and back already.

I've read that the thickness of glass only needs to increase if the tank height increases; width and length shouldn't matter.

the sticky about this says 12 mm for a 6'x3'x2' though.

I read the Sticky first but it had different information to what I had been told about height and thickness. I thought width wasn't the major strength problem but that the height was the greatest governing factor of the glass thinkness required.
I think I should be able to get away with it.
Any other opinions???

imo you should be good as those dimensions should be 6x2x3 the height hasn't changed you are correct no more thickness should be required. I would recommend adding bracing across the top. you should be able to make it out of glass as well. what are you planning on using for a frame for the base? how are you planning on executing this plan. I will be watching to see the progress.

I am going to make the tank myself as a monster project but it's not something I have to make ASAP. I will get the glazier to cut me the pannel and make the tank sometime next year. I will also make the stand myself. I have a 6x2x2 and a 6x2.5x2.5.
The tank I want to make will have to have 3x8inch wide braces across the top and maybe some bracing along the bottom.
I really want 3 tanks in my fish room the 6x3x2 (project) the 6x2.5x2.5 and a 500g 8x3.5x2.5 that I am getting made sometime next year.
I have and will post pics of course.
