They are not illegal. Check Gar legality around the world. I have had a few Gar and read up on it many times. Unless this has changed in the past few weeks...

As for the legality - then Maine really needs to re-do its unrestricted species list. Based on your Maine.gov site, they are illegal - I would definitely check with them first, to be on the safe side.
I don't mean to upstage your thread - just don't want a fellow MFK to get in hot water.
Scott Crowe has them for $35 (Floridas) - They are about 10 or 12 inches. If you want one, I'm happy to orchestrate a delivery/pickup with you, for small compensation, or a trade.

I just checked http://www.maine.gov/ifw/wildlife/species/unrestricted_species.htm this website and as far as I see I would be all set with Gar. Arowana and many other fish are restricted but as far as Gar I didn't see anything. As for the $35 FLG what would the shipping cost around? Total Cost? Thanks
