I am setting up a small salt water tank for my daughters. I would like to do something colorful. There will be some live rock (up to 7lbs) and prob nothing else. Im new to salt, so I dont think I will beinf doing any corals. Any thoughts?

In a small tank like that, there are a couple options that you have. You could do some firefish, wrasses or goby's. A couple cardinalfish would look cool too.

1lb of LR displaces approx. 1/3rd of a gal of water so your lookin' at less than 5 gal of water, not many options, probably should stick to a single small Damsel like a yellow tail or fiji devil. Small damsels are super hardy and very tolerant of varying water conditions, also colorful and fearless - Great beginner fish. If you add more than 1 fish you might be changing water every other day to keep nitrates under control. You could also add 2-3 small hermits blueleg or redleg and 2-3 small snails as a clean up crew.

Would it be better to not do any rock?

No not really , with that kinda volume your lookin' at small reef fish, ones even smaller than clowns. They live in and around LR, not to mention the LR will be your nitrogen cycle provider, far greater than anything else can do without a sump. With openwater predators it's a different story but I know of none that could live in 7 gal. Another fish to consider would be a Royal Gramma - very hardy, very pretty, but mixed results with personality. Some ppl have theirs hide all the time others, like mine, never.

Thanks for all of your help. I will check all of these fish out and let my daughters pick from the ones available. One last question. My LFS sells live rock for $11 per lb., would it be acceptable to use the dry/unused texas lace I have for my African Cichlid tank? If so, should I just buy a small live rock and put them together?

+1 definitely want to do live rock.

Throw some hermit crabs in there to cycle the tank. She will like watching those. The red or blue legs look cool in a blue light. They are cheap too.

Oh and get another tank ready because soon you will be hooked on salt and there is no going back once you do....hehehe
:D

What about a shrimp/goby combo? They are fun to watch... 7g too small for a YWG and pistol shrimp? - I personally have always wanted to try this combo.
