Hello everyone! I'm looking to build a ratherlarge tank somewhere in the future, and have a few questions.
Now, the current dimensions I'm looking at are 8ft L x 4ft W x 3ft D, which is roughly 2700l, and (If I am correct) about 700g. Something that big probably presents a problem for someone like me, who has very little experience in both building and designing things. I have a few friends and family members who can help me construct it, but designing it so it won't fall apart as soon as I pour water in is going to be a bit more difficult.
So, since you guys are the experts on building large tanks, I thought I'd ask here!
  • Big tank = lots of water = a lot of pressure. Therefore, I know I'll need some thick glass. Would 18mm be enough?
  • Adding to that, how thick should the plywood be?
  • Since I'd have to build a sump for this, how big should it be? I can get my hands on cheap 4-6ft tanks and modify them; would that be okay?
  • For a project like this, what waterproofing agent would you recommend? I could try my hand at installing fiberglass resin coated with epoxy paint, though I'm not sure if it'll go well.
  • Are there any special structural requirements that a tank of this size would need? I'll do my best to reinforce it and I can easily build a steady stand, but are there any particular parts I should pay big attention to?
  • Are there any good articles around? I'll start flicking through the DIY threads here right after I'm finished with this post.
Well, that's all I an think of right now. I'd love to hear any tips or advice pertaining to plywood builds.
Thanks for putting up with my rambling :P
