I've had a 150 gallon for many years, and always relied on 2 emperor 400s, as Ive always been concerned with stories of canister filters leaking and pumping huge quantities of water on the floor.

Since the lockdown ive spent a lot of time working with my tank(its in my basement office) and have almost all new fish.

current stock

albino oscar 6 inches
severum 5 inches
Jack dempsey 5 inches
green terror 3 inches
6 3-4 inch silver dollars
3 convicts
1 banded leporinus 9 inches
2 common plecos 5-6 inches

I do water changes twice a week, about 30% each, and vacuum. I clean each filter every other week(in tank water) and added extra sponges. I also run a diy polishing filter for an hour or two after feeding or vacuuming the gravel. I also run a 1200 gph powerhead on one end to agitate the surface, and to keep detritus from settling in the gravel(gravel is 3/4 inches deep)

I realize the plecos will get out of hand at some point and will likely give 1 or both away(possibly replaced with a fancier pleco species that doesn't get as huge).

Looking at the sunsun 704b, and would like to set up primarily for mechanical filtration. would the best move be to just run coarse, medium, fine , and then polyfill or pinkie floss in the 4 trays? What are you guys running in yours? Also would the flow of the filter together with the powerhead be too much flow?

Any tips or modification suggestion to make this filter better would be appreciated as well.

I run polyfill in mine and it works great. If you run a staged mechanical filtration set up using different grades, get smaller as you go up. The water goes into the tray at the bottom first.

i saw the 704b on amazon with a brand name ""Polar Aurora". for $76. Any reason not to buy that vs the sunsun branded one?

Same filter, different name based on who is selling it. I always went with whichever I found cheaper.
