I have fire mouths in back yard in 90 gallon plastic "pond" . They have been out for 8 months and doing great .

However now the nights are getting cooler and it was 72 degrees last night (mid 80s now during the day) .

We have some cool nights 60s during Dec/Jan usually low 80s/high 70s during day.

I added 2 heaters set at 72 degrees .
They are used to night temps of low 80s but Nov to Jan that is not the norm.

72 to cold for night temps ? Day temps climb so as a whole not a problem.

you shouldent have any problems at that temp, adding the heater is a good idea tho.
just keep it set at like 70 like you have done.

sounds like you have it set up perfectly. only question is how many watts are the heaters?

They are 200 watts each one is marineland stealth the other is Jager .

I have 2 pairs of breeding Firemouth so placed each heater in other side of "pond" 52 inch long near their flower pots and driftwood.

Thanks

the problem would be temperature swings

I know and with such a small volume of water thats my concern. The "pond" is only half buried otherwise it would be a Bufo Marinus sauna .

Being half buried keeps temp bit stable but not enough . Funny how temp has dropped here in Miami .
Few days ago temp was low 80s at night now today it was 72 this am.

Didn't expect it this cold till Dec . Last Dec this time way hotter but chilly in Jan/Feb

Thanks

I will see how it works but might still bring them in if they don't seem to eat as should, etc because temp swing as cichlid mentioned could be an issue and if thats case will pick up 55 gal just for few months indoor housing.

They seem to like it outside and good color so if can keep outside prefer that. Granted never see them lol unless feeding or changing the water .

Thanks

the heaters will limit the temp swings, i would say to go pickup 2 powerheads and 2 pieces of 2" diameter pvc the length of the heaters, attach the powerhead to one end of the pvc and slide the heater into the other end, then just set it on the bottom of the pond pointing towards the center, to keep the warm water circulating better and keep the temp more constant.

Thanks a lot very good idea never thought of it . I have extra powerheads will go to home depot now pick up the pvc .

Worse case will bring the fish in for couple months though as a whole day temps even on cold days here during winter are in high 70s/80s so prefer to try this. There are exceptions.

Thanks

if it is partially buried with 2 200 watt heaters with the powerhead pvc set up you shouldnt have to bring them in unless it gets down to the 40's
