Just picked up a 72gal reef ready bow front, what sould i do with it? Any ideas...looking for livestock and equiptment ideas....

jags are nice, but if you wanna put him in there he'll eventually want that tank all to himself. for now while hes a baby, you could get some more juvies and see which one you like the most in a few months. Im partial to viejas, maybe an argentea or zonatum?

i do have a 2in baby jag i could put in there..mmmmm.....

I wouldn't recomend a jag for a 72g, espacially if that jag is a male, well only if this is a long term thing. I have an oscar in a 72g and is about 13'', and feel that is too small. When a large fish like that freaks out or is a tank buster it could lead to problems. If you are looking for a larger cichlids wet pet I would recomend:

parachromis-RTM, or freddy
amphs-just about any like midas-pair
GT-pair
JDs -pair
grammodes-pair
mayan
salvini- pair
nics-pair
texas-pair

or a mix of smaller cichlids:

planted SA dwarfs
group of smaller geos
group of smaller CAs like any thorichthys, archos or cryptos.

I have been thinking of changing my stock and these are some of the options I have been considering.Hope that helps...

^ Many of the fish you posted get just as big as a Jag. To the op, in my experience a 72 is big enough for most CA/SA's to live alone, other than say an umbee or dovii. I had a 72 bow for a while and I kept a couple different fish in it over time, like a 15" Butti and a 14" oscar. The key to making it work is to let it live alone, I would not recommend a pair of anything other than the smaller cichlids like a jack dempsey

i do think the 72 is too small for a large jag by himself but i like the idea of putting a few 3inchers in there till they get a little bigger keep the one i like best and move him to a larger tank.... i have a pair of salvinis now there in a diff tank hehe. Convicts are just feeder fish here lol. and everything else i have is reef, so maybe discus? maybe.....dunno maybe it'll just be a grow out tank....

just sucks sitting there like that I HATE AN EMPTY FISH TANK! LOL. Water running and ready. DIY wet/dry sump etc. ITS READY! lol. Not ready for discus tho. would have to make a few changes for that.

Most of the ones I listed get 12'' max where as a male jag can get 15''-20'' full grown from what I hear. I personally would only keep 10'' and under in a 4' tank. Larger and more aggressive cichlids really need the space.
