72 years ago today December 7th 1941 “A day that will live in infamy” The US was plunged into the Second World War. So in somber remembrance of all the solders, sailors and airmen that lost there lives that day. You are not forgotten.

Last year saw the passing of the last veteran of the First World War and now the Second World War veterans the youngest of which are in their late 80’s are starting to pass at an accelerated rate, it will not be long before “The Greatest Generation” passes into history. No matter where in the world you’re reading this, if you are fortunate enough to know a WW2 veteran, cherish the time you have with them.

Thank you for posting this.

cruising in to dock on the USS Ranger, CV61 in 79 you pass by the monument. was a moving moment for me. Some times reality just jumps out and slaps you upside the head.

The first wave of the attack was to take out military air bases in order to protect the Pearl Harbor strike force. Kaneohe Bay was the site of a major Navy patrol seaplane base. My father was playing baseball when planes with the rising sun on them circled the ball field. It appeared that the people in the planes were looking at the ball players. The naval air station in Kaneohe was one of the air bases bombed on December 7. Of the thirty-three planes on the ground or on the water, twenty-seven planes were destroyed and the remaining six were damaged. Only the three planes in the air at the time of the attack survived the attack. The ball players saw the smoke rising from Kaneohe Bay, and later the MPs came and disrupted the ball game and sent the players home. My father is nearly ninety-two. He is a veteran of WWII.

Pacu Mom, tell him thank you the next time you see him.

As a teacher, one of the hardest things for me to understand and not get angry about is how little today's students appreciate the sacrifice so many made (and are still making).

What a great recolection, those are exactly the things that will be lost once they are all gone. My father was also a WW2 veteran and I remember all the stories I would listen to him tell. It is a shame this thread got so few replies, it seems this is fading into obscurity. That in itself seem tragic to me.

^ it is tragic, just saw this.. thanks for reminding everyone, people need that at times. I work at a bar, and people have been toasting to lost veterans all night.. too bad the youngest person other then me (21) is 45.. I'd like to see more younger people appreciating these things as was already said

my grandfather was in ww2 and unfortunately passed away last august. He never told me any stories except when he was awfully drunk and the story is too bad to share here.. let's just say he was one of the first guys to see concentration camps in person.. The horrors of ww2 cannot be forgotten or they will repeat themselves. The fact that there are "neo-nazis" in america makes me want to move to Canada out of disgust.
