I recently picked up a 75 gal tank from my lfs that is need of some repair. Im pretty much brand new to aquariums but i would like to repair this mysef if at all possible:nilly: . When the tank is filled all the way the sides split open at the seam in the corner so i guess its just the bonding material that joins the two pieces of glass that needs to be replaced/rebonded:confused: . Just wondering if anyone could tell me what is used to bound the glass before using silicone to seal the inside, that would be great. Thaks in advance for any help, im new to this site but have been lurking for about 2 months. Seems like the best place to get answers from people who know what they are talking about.

I had a 40g bust a seam on me and you just want to cut out all the old silicone and get it clean as possible. Get a cheap calking gun and get a tube of GE 1 clear silicone (do not get 2 it has a mildew fighting agent which is bad for aquarium use) shoot some in the joint then tape it together and run a nice bead across the side and use a plastic spoon to smooth it out. Let it cure for at least 24 hours then do a test fill.

Good Luck!

All you need is a razor blade...a flat comfortable work serface and a tube of GE..#1 silicone...One thing you should concider because of the type of failure is totally rebuilding the tank. Simply fixing the one seam and resealing the inside corners might lead to another failure down the road. I can give you more detailed instructions on the repair if you like but it's not as complicated as you might think. You can also check out the DIY archives for a lot of great articles on tank building.

Thanks for the info, so I guess just aquarium grade silicone(GE #1) is all that is needed and then allow it to cure for a couple days huh?

Ill give it a shot.
