I recently got a 75 (48x18x22) gallon tank, and I've been going between discus and bigger, more aggressive fish. I've been doing my own research of course, but I'd like someone else's ideas. If some people could give me the names of fish that could go in a 75, that'd be great.

I'm currently leaning towards a gar or a datnoid. I'm aware gars (and datnoids) get very big, but was wondering if I could potentially get one of the smaller species, because I could theoretically push for a bigger tank (125), using the whole "we can't sell it back, it's our responsibility" arguement. The one condition/issue is that my mother won't let me feed them live food.

Ther are literally hundreds of fish you could get. I wouldn't get something like a gar if you can't guarantee an upgraded tank and a 75 is way too small I believe. I'm not familiar with them so don't know if there's any smaller species that would work.
My suggestion is go to the shop , pick a few fish you like, do some research then ask here for first hand experience from people who have kept them.
These threads have a tendency to go on and on until the OP gets the answer they are looking for even if there are 50 answers contradicting what they want to hear. It's better to be specific and you will get some solid advice from people who know their stuff and genuinely want to help you out.
Good luck and welcome aboard.

I agree avoid anything that will outgrow the tank especially if its not your house coz all too often the upgrades just dont happen for whatever reason...

But since you mentioned Gars and Dats what about something like freshwater butterfly fish and freshwater archer fish... kind of similar but different while still being unique in their own ways...

Alright, so everywhere I look concerning gars, I get numbers completely out of reach for me currently (I've found it to be around 200-300 gallons), so, unfortunately, I think (know) that's out until I get my own house. When I look at dats, they seem to be somewhat close, (generally 90-125 gallons or so), but close isn't what I'm looking for. I'll probably go for discus, so feel free to let me know some interesting fish that are compatible with discus. And, as always, thanks for the help guys!

If you go with discus, the focus of the tank should be discus. Tetras and cory cats will do well with them. Maybe some bolivian rams. But I wouldn't put anything that gets large or even semi-aggressive with them.
I agree with l3ctron that some UJ bichirs would be cool for this tank size since you seem to like the oddball/predator type fish. They will also be a little easier to keep than discus.
Could have a few UJ bichirs and a hujeta gar or needlenose gar. Not real gars, they stay much smaller and grow slowly. But similar.

Go with discus, redline rasboras, and like 2 zebra plecos ($180-250 each Pleco) or instead of the amazing expensive Pleco go with some Bristle Nose Plecos

Mellenium red rainbowfish,longfin cherry barbs,chili rasboras,ghost knifefish,glass catfish,oil catfish.
