A few months ago I set up a 55 gallon - a huge tank for me when compared to my small 10 gallon that I used to house a few danios and a couple of platys. The overall plan was to set up a perfect Senegal Bichir tank, complete with two minor schools of Rainbowfish, a plethora of plants, and some good murky hiding places. Unfortunately in the preliminary planning of buying the Rainbows and plants, the contents of the 10 gallon ended up in my 55. And now I can't bear to take these happy little fish from their larger home - so adding a Bichir that will make quick lunch out of them is out of the question.

So I move onto a new 75 gallon that I'm planning. I'm absolutely going with the Senegal in this case, however, I am not quite sure what else to put with him. The rainbows were kind of my ticket when it came to large, colorful fish that would grow past Bichir chomping-range. So now I'm back to the drawing board.

And - on a separate but still relevant note: would it be possible to have a Senegal and a Black Ghost Knife together in a 75? I know I'm probably just dreaming (but oh how cute is the face of that BGK!)

Soo open for any suggestions and advice! What should I keep with my Bichir? What will make him the happiest?

Thanks in advance!

i had 11 tiger barbs in a 55g with my bichir they seemed to pick on him haha and the bichir didnt even look at them (even the smaller ones)

but mine is only 6-7ish inches and hes pretty lazy when it comes to eating...

i think you could keep him in there till you get a 75 if you get one small as long as you dont get any other "pretty" fish

and as far as the bgk never had one...

The bichir will eat barbs, it might take a while, but eventually...I was down to one after about 3 weeks housing a senegal with a school of barbs.

The BGK will be OK if it is bigger than what your poly can reasonably fit into its mouth. I lost one because I didn't follow that rule...A nice $10 bichir snack!

I have 3 African knifes in my poly tank (6 and growing), these guys are fast and tweaky enough not to become bichir chow! They even get housed together at PetSmart.

i have a school of silver dollars with mine, but i also bought my bichirs and dollars @ the same time and my sens are still 3-3.5", so far they've more or less left everybody alone and you could probably have a pretty sizable school of them in a 75g
