Hey guys,
Whats the biggest american cichlid i can keep in a 75 long term. I really like jags but apparently you need 125+

Anybody have any opinions ?

green terror or texas would look good. if thats your salvini in your pic then, NICE!! lol

Nah thats not mine haha, just a pic of the net till i get one of my own ;)

Yeah iv'e been considering a texas or a while now. Also, is there a difference between white/gold saum other than the obvious ?

yes white saum costs more and is harder to find. other than that they are both the same fish. just different localities. I remember reading on here that a member of the forum went collecting in south america and found the gold and silver saums together in the same area. so I suppose they are just variation, like the difference between a red red devil or a whitish orange one. same fish different variety.

also the first described Green terror wasn't even what we keep today, it had white edging but was a different species to both the gold and silver saum.

as for in a 75 the width is what gets you, if you have a wide tank its better than a long skinny tank. so if your tank is only 18" wide keeping a 12" fish in it would be kind of cruel unless it was the only guy in there.

I used to have a 3x2x2 breeding tank to breed large cichlids in and never had any issues with that.

Salvini
Nicaraguensis
Texas
geophagus species
firemouths and other thoricthys species
honduran red point (fish in my avatar)
green terror
smaller parachromis species, I believe either friedrichstahli or loeseli (can't spell) get around 8"-10"

You can keep a pair of jags in a 75 gallon. I have done it before with no problems.

Thanks guys. My LFS currently has White saums so i might go down that track. If theres no males it will be an oscar or a red devil.

I would love to keep a jag in the 75 but i dont like the idea of a 18" fish in a tank with a width of 18".

If you want character then an oscar is the best bet for a single fish. nothing quite compares to them.

they come in all varieties colours etc so you should be able to find one you like

Is it possible to keep 2 Oscars in there ? The tank is barebottom and i have lots of time on my hands so i could do 3-4 water changes a week...

Im going to my lfs in about 1 hour so i need to know haha.

Thanks!
