I posted a comparable, longer, and more detailed thread in the CA cichlid area, but am looking for input here, too (sadly , it doesn't look like my copy and paste thread idea will work).

I have not kept saltwater fish in over a decade (i have continuously kept fish of some kind for 30 years) but have recently had the idea of returning to the proverbial rodeo cross my mind.

I have a 75 gallon tank that I am thinking about setting up and going one of two directions- either a saltwater, fish only tank with a picasso trigger and Dog Faced puffer or a CA/SA cichlid tank.

Any input?

Specifically as it relates to this sub-forum:

Could a picasso trigger and DFP successfully be kept in a 75 gallon tank? If not both, could one of them and another tank mate? Not being familiar with current saltwater fish keeping specifics, what are the average monthly costs regarding articial salt (ie Instant Ocean) mixes these days? Any issues that a longtime freshwater fishkeeper that's been away from the saltwater world for a long time not be considering?

Thanks.

I wouldn't do those two in a 75 (not for long anyway) both of those fish have the potential to reach 12 inches. The triggers attitude and snappy way of feeding could cause some problems for the puffer.
As for cost my LFS has instant ocean 50 gallon bag for 20 bucks. There are better deals on line if you buy in bulk.

I agree with the previous comment, both fish grow large and I wouldn't put them in anything less then a 120 gal. Salt depends on the brand I buy salt for coral purposes that have the trace elements already added like the Red Sea reef salt or aquaforest salt and those go for around $80-$90 per bucket and that's what I normally go through in a month

Yep,sounds like a deathmatch in the making.

Picasso triggers have much different personalites than others. You may get a mean one, you may get a docile one. Although upon my research I've read that they are less aggressive than a clown or undulated triggerfish. Personally, if you were to do it, I'd buy them both at the same time and add them at the same time.
They will be fine in a 75 gallon for a while, but you will need to upgrade to a 120 gallon or bigger.
Or you could keep the dogface or trigger as one big show fish with other medium fish like squrrielfish or foxface
