I have a 75 gallon with an 8" male JD and a mated pair of blood parrots. Currently they all get along ok but the JD is starting to push around the parrots. I am thinking about moving the parrots to their own tank and keeping my 75 as a sa/ca tank with the JD as the "centerpiece" fish. I am wondering what some people's opinions are of tank stocking options for this size with a JD- I know there is only so much room. Not just what could work but what would you do under the circumstances to create a cool sa/ca tank around the JD. I feel like having just one JD would be really bare even though he is an awesome one!

With just one Jack Dempsey in a 75, you have A LOT of options. Really depends on what you are looking for...

I would let the JD be the boss of the tank, get some large dither/target fish and potentially get another suitable candidate to share with the JD. Green Terrors, Convicts, Salvinis, Severums, are all possibilities.

What kind of tank setup do you have? Lots of hiding places? Also, what sort of Cichlids/fish species do you like?

Apart from large dithers, you'll be left with a pretty boring tank. All of the JD's I had, stayed in their cave for the whole day; venturing out only to murder every other fish I had, for the fun of it.

I'd keep the parrots and move the JD

Well, my JD used to hide a lot but he has become more outgoing and is swimming around much more. I don't have any caves in the tank for this reason. I have some long pieces of driftwood and some large rocks that he can sit behind if he wants but no real caves because then I might not see him much. I am planning on keeping the parrots just thinking about getting their own tank plus the fact that they spawn all the time seems to add extra aggression and stress to the tank. I love sa/ca cichlids though- maybe I just have to find the right combo with my JD.
