I am obtaining a 75 gallon tank and would like some larger cichlids to inhabit it. Currently I have a common jewel, so I have to work around that. If you could stock this tank, how would you put it together? I also would like some suggestions for filters and heaters, as this is the largest tank I've ever owned. Thank you!

you could probably keep a fire mouth and a convict if you're not worried about biotope. id suggest a pair of jewels and a group of dithers.

or you could keep just a single large cichlid like an oscar, midas, trimac, managuense, or a flowerhorn if you're into hybrids.

Get a breeding pair of jaguar cichlids. Heaters, just go to petsmart and look at the label on the heaters, it will say max tank size. As or filtration i would say an Emperor 400(i have one on my 75, works great and rated up to 90g) and maybe a Aqua clear 200(20-50g). And if you go with the breeding pair of jags make sure to put sponges over the intake of the filters so the fry don't get sucked in( use sponges from pet stores, most chain store brands are made with soap). Good luck with your tank!

hate to disagree but a 75 is way too small for a pair of jags. good size for an mbuna tank, i am sure the jewel would do fine.

Now.....I have mbuna....m. auratus....and when I asked another fish forum this question, I was told the two species could not be in the same tank due to the difference in pH requirements......?

try like mbunas or something but do NOT do trimacs or jaguars way to small..

While the two fish do have different pH in their natural habitats (6.5-7.5pH=Riverine, 7.9-8.4pH=Rift Lake) You could find a suitable medium like say 7.5 which both varieties of fish should do fine in. Cichlids are hardy fish, so as long as there is no pH shock, the two should do fine together. However, as a biotope guy myself, I suggest you setup a nice African riverine tank.
