My pike cichlid just died, and I discovered my water is very hard and I'm unable to accommodate south american cichlids, so I want to give African cichlids a try. I was thinking of trying shell dwellers with some julidochromis or a similar species, perhaps with a Kelvis cichlid? I wanted some more input from people who know more about African cichlids than I do before I get anything.

I had a setup with that stocking. Multies or Similis are the the lower aggression species. Julie species come down to personal taste. I had a gold calvus and Sumbu Dwarf comprecisceps. I would do the calvus again in a heartbeat. Seven Sumbu in a 55g didn't have enough room.

You could do shellies (agree with multis or similis) along with a pair of Julidochromis and a pair of Calvus in a 75G. For the julidochromis and calvus, start with six and when a pair forms, rehome the extras that are rejected.

What are your test results for pH?

Around 8.4

If you want a high level of activity you could house a group of 15-20 tropheus in an appropriately scaped and maintained 75gal 🤷🏻‍♂️
This is my 125gal mixed tropheus species tank for an idea of the activity level. In a 75 I would recommend 1 variant and shoot for 3-4 males and 12-15 females. If buying juvies you’d need to start w about 30 and scale down once you can sex them.
They’re loads of fun to keep and watch. Never a dull moment!
