I just finished cycling another 75 gallon and in it I have 2 demosoni and 3 yellow labs. I want mostly a peacock tank with this 75. Can I put 2 Aulonocara Stuartgranti (red shoulder) and 1 Aulonocara sp "Maleri Island" ? Local petland has them on hold for me they have them in the "Mixed mbuna tank" and there 3 for 18.99...lol....I want to take advantage of this deal IF this set-up will work. Demo's and labs are about 1 and a half inches maybe. BTW the reason I have the demosoni's and yellow labs in there is because They were getting beat up in my other tank. I would say they are not too aggressive...they barely even come out unless its to eat. ::EDIT:: I can try to put the demosoni's and labs back in my other 75 but I dont want them to get killed :-(. I have Kenyi that are a menace!!

IMO mbuna go with mbuna. I think over stocking and over filtration make a great, successful, good looking african tank. Although you can never be sure, overcrowding really cuts down on agression. Take a look at this guys tank, I think it's the perfect african set upalthough he does have some brackish fish in there:

This subject is debated here and there on forums. Some folks keep only mbuna, others mix them up with similarly-sized/aggression haps and peacocks. Both sides have valid arguments and different experiences.

I have had pretty good luck both in mixed mostly-male community tanks as well as breeder tanks. Most of my 40 breeders and 50 longs have 2 breeding groups - peacock/mbuna, peacock/hap hap/mbuna or two very different haps or mbuna (just never two peacock breeding groups).

I would say go for it as long as the peacocks are a good bit larger than the alpha demasoni. Even if they are not, you never know - the demasoni may ignore the peacocks. A "plan B" tank to move the peacocks to wouldn't be a bad idea.

Thanks for the advice guys. I put the labs back in the 75 but I left the 2 demasoni in there. The peacocks are bigger than the demasoni and there getting along fine. Looks like for now it's going to work.

My 2 demasoni are 2 inches and I believe I have one male and female. They have been chasing each other around lately. Would they breed that at that size? And most importantly would the fry survive with the peacocks in there or should I get like a 10 gallon just incase they breed?

In my african tank i have had a lot of luck just by over crowding and changing the decor around every now and again. They all range from about 2-7'' and get a long fine

2" demasoni are definitely large enough to breed. I have had them breed at 1.5" before. If you had a bunch of rockwork, a couple would probably survive without pulling the female. Being so small, demasoni do not have big clutches.. maybe 8-10 eggs for a 2" female.

Cool!! I have 9 peacocks in there with the 2 demasoni. Am I fully stocked for a 75?
