Ok I finally know what I want in my 75...Jd's! but I don't just want Jd's which wouldn't be much of a problem if I didn't want to breed them. My question is I want to have a JD pair but I also want other CA/SA american cichlids.
here's what I have
JD/EBJD pair
1 green terror
2 male convicts
1 mid size pleco
1 synodontis cat

do I even need a scavenger for this tank? Plz tell me if im overstocked!. If the pair will be a problem I have a seperate 29 They could breed in.

no pleco and no cat....the GT will get big and your going to have to upgrade, cons are good, but will harass your JD's. I'll say get 1xJD(m), 1xEJD(m) 3xJD(F),3XEJD(F).

I wouldn't recommend that 29 for a JD pair ever...too small.

I'd say you're close to the limit as far as stocking. Although a lot depends on your w/c schedule and filtration too. I have a 90 with a female JD, Male GT and Male FM, along with 3 pleco's and 3 yoyo loaches. This tank is cleaned every week, and I remove 30-40% of the water during each w/c. I can go 2 weeks but I change it once per week to stay ahead.

Now I'd be more concerned about your agression from the mated pair of JD's as they will absolutely kill any other fish they see as a threat to their fry. In addition, I love GT's but they are slow growers and may not be able to keep up with the JD's growth rate. Therefore if the GT falls behind he becomes an easy target for your JD pair. Personally I'd try the JD pair and a couple male cons as you mentioned, but you're gona have to keep an eye on them closely.

As far as scavengers, I'd stay away from those that may attempt to eat the JD's eggs. They will most likely get creamed when they get too close. I've had luck in my 90 with bushy nosed pleco's and also with cory cats. I had 5 of them once and they were great. The bushy nose will take care of any algae too, and with that footprint there is always a litte growing here and there. If not throw in a slice of zuchini or algae wafers.

Do you have a quarantine tank in case one/some of the other fish get injured or sick from stress? would you use the 29?

Are your JD's already adults, and a formed pair? Or are you starting from scratch with all juvies?

I hope I helped you a little, but I think we need a little more info to get you going

Good luck!:headbang2

so 8 jd's in a 75?

:WHOA::WHOA::WHOA:

I wouldn't suggest that. This guy is looking for a set up that will house these fish for their entire lives. Adding 8 JD's to a 75 is not a good idea in this case IMO

its gonna be hard for anything else in with breeding cichlids. they may be ok when not but will bully everyone in the tank when they are.

could I use a divider?

cons will be fine. they are quick, and give more crap than they take. I have 6 cons with a RD and an O. no aggression in any direction, almost like ther is mutual respect.

Don't get 8 JDs for a 75. Don't put a pair of JDs in a 29. get two JD's and a couple of Cons. or a couple of firemouths instead of the cons.

EBJDs are very sensitive and have short lifespans, from my understanding. I'd stick with the standard JDs.

For a 55, I'd recommend 2 female JDs and two male Cons. And pray they don't somehow breed.
