how many lake malawi cichlids can i keep in a 75? i plan to have 5 clown loaches and some sort of synodontis cat as well. how many of each fish can i keep?

It really depends on who you ask, what specific species you are keeping, and how much your filtration can handle. A general way of stocking would be groups of individuals. 4 groups of about 5 individuals would be a good place to start. You can keep exactly 0 clown loaches in a 75 unless you have a very large aquarium ready for them once they outgrow your tank. I've never personally kept them but that is because I seen individuals a foot long and since they are schooling fish, they are not suited for a 75 gallon. As for synodontis catfish, I have no idea.

Two Marineland Emperor 400's should be enough filtration for a 75 gal. tank. African Cichlids are big waste producers. A weekly 50% WC should be performed to maintain water quality.

There are a few different schools of thought on this subject. Are you going for variety or species specific tank?

I would agree with the above. Clown loaches and African cichlids don't really mix either. Synodontis live in that lake so should be ok. Again same as the cichlids could be ok could be bad need more info on which ones. Size wise I would go with some thing like multipunks or depending on the cichlids petricolas but not lucipinnis make sure they are true petricolas. Lucipinnis are referred to as dwarf petricolas.
