I know i have made alot of these kind of thread lately (last couple of months) but I have been having real trouble trying to find a stocklist I really like on this type of setup. I originally wanted a red devil but I read they got too big so I did some searching around to find what i was looking for. I settled on nics but having kept them the short while I have I don't think thier what im looking for either. I've descided that Im not really interested in breeding as much as I want a really personable fish. My tanks are starting to kind of fall apart so it's been a little messy trying to get exactly what I want. So I went to Jeff Rapps website hoping to find something and I found a couple of options and now I think I know exactly what im looking for.

That being said, I think that amphilophus lyonsi would be a good choice but there isn't much info out there on them. But I do believe they stay small enough to stay in a 75(possibly 90) alone and they may be able to tolerate tank mates. I want to keep my flier cichlids I have with them but im not sure how they are aggression wise. If not flier could I do convicts?Any other info would be nice. They really remind me of trimacs which I have always wanted. If I can't do lyonsi my back up is a green terror.

PS:on a side note could I order only one fish from Jeff Rapps? I haven't read that he requires a minimum order. I live in MD so apparently he offers ground.

I only ordered from him once, back in 2002, and he did have a minimum order $$ amount then. I agree, I don't see on his site any word of a minimum on domestic shipments. Presumably you could order a single fish, but I'd ask him. There is also language about ground shipments as well -I'd clarify with him.

@baldtaxguy-thanks I will contact him and clarify on that.

@HrHagel-I posted about that and people were saying that a red devil really should have more room and I agree a 75 might be a bit small for a 12in fish. SO I want to choose a fish that dosen't get more than 10in which I have read lyonsi get around.

I have a female red devil in a 55 gallon and she has been doing fine for the past eight years in there. If you go with a male you would want at least a 75 though. Both of these sizes are without any tank mates though.

I've descided to just keep one lyonsi hopefully. Im kind of past the red devil thing. I love them and want to keep them but later in a larger setting. I think lyonsi might be a better choice. My thought was to keep one with a few smaller tankmates like my flier cichlids. But would they be too aggressive for that?

From what I have heard about fliers, they are not considered any more and usually less aggressive than convicts. I believe they typically get a little larger than cons like 8" is the usual max. How many fliers do you have and any breeding pairs? If no pairs I think they would be fine with a lyonsi and I think a combination of fliers and a lyonsi would look amazing!

@fin01-thanks so much for that! I have 4 but I will weed out the males and just keep those with the lyonsi. I want 2-3male flier cichlids and 1 lyonsi which again will look great. Hopefully lyonsi have just as much personality as thier larger cousins.

I got my lyonsi from jeff about a year ago its close to full grown now and so colorfull. It does have personality and is only slightly agressive but will and can hold its own with much larger fish
