My 55g is currently sitting on a wrought iron stand. I recently acquired a nice wooden stand and canopy and am planning to make the switch this weekend.

I am well aware of the nitrogen cycle, hence my question: will it damage my canister and HOB filters' bacteria colonies to do a 75%+ "water change"?

I am currently away from home in an apartment, so I do not have any of the large Rubbermaid bins I use back home to save the tank water when I have to move aquariums. I do have a storage container that can hold 25-30% of the 55g's water, but I'm going to have to drain the rest into the sink. I will be using this container to house the tank's inhabitants as well as keep the filter media from drying out.

So do you think I'll have to deal with new tank syndrome after this massive water change or should it be alright?

you will be fine man, most of your BB is concentrated in your filter media and thats where its most important to have it. I know plenty of fish keepers who keep messy or sensative fish and do large (50-75%) water changes quite frequently if not daily with no issues. just make sure your water is either aged or dechlorinated before you add it to the tank and/or fire up your filters and you should have no problem.

You'll be fine as long as you don't let your filter media dry out, lol, i accidentally do 75% water changes all the time by not paying enough attention while draining, and once did a 75% water change and put back in about 100%, lol didn't notice till i stepped in a puddle. dang TV gets me every time.

You will be fine, there are some members here who do 100% water changes on a regular basis. As stated before the lump sum of your bb is in your Filters so make sure you use prime or whatever you choose BEFORE you turn the filters on.

You will be fine I do 75% changes every once in a while without problems. Just save the media and everything you can from drying out.

you will be fine.

I do 80-90% WC's on my 55g feeder tank every other day because of the bio load.
