Been getting back into cichlids a lot lately with my 120, and I have a very peaceful set up with no trouble makers.

I'm thinking of setting up a 75g soon, I just paid off all my student loan so I'm free to begin saving and not worrying about how much i'm going to owe lol.
I have already planned a nice picky eater predatory 75, but I'm thinking I'd like to know what my alternatives are concerning cichlids. i've been keeping and breeding just about every sort of cichlid besides chromides for the last 12 years. I'm just curious as to what would be a good stocking for a 75g, lots of sites seem to have changed their status lately and moving oscars and jags up to 120g minimum, which is great for the fish but I'm just curious what is still considered okay to stock in a 75g?

Interested in either a group, Pair or possibly a wet pet, any ideas?

i have my 10-11" midevil in a 75 and think its too small for him. he will get a 125 when i move.

if i were to set up a 75 again i would try enough a pair of salvini or (more likely) a group of female centrals. like a female salvini, convict and nic.

I like ehh's all girl central thing. You could get a heterospilus from www.wetspottropicals.com dont get too big and also a fancy pleco type. Im keeping an vieja argentea in a 75 but will probably have to upgrade at some point (hoping not too).

ive had the female tank in the back of my mind for a while now haha

im sure that fish will let you know eventually jaws. my big guy is just so damn active. if he was more reclusive i would think the 75 would be ok. but he really fills that tank out.

Female tank sounds pretty cool actually. I could always move someone to my 120 if things wet bad. I keep geos and parrots in there with plants its a nice set up.
I could track down one of those female cons with a lot of red, a really nicely colored female salvini. I think if you could source good quality fish it would be quite beautiful.

I`m not against the idea of upgrading.

Any pair ideas or a single fish that I guess could stay in a 75g? I don`t really like JD`s. Seen some beautiful ones but I find them too retiring in personality.
are there any CA cichlids that can be kept in a species aquarium? kind of like geos or would pairing cause too much conflict. I have heard of people doing full convict tanks and treating it kind of like Mbuna

Your gonna have to spend some time on google. We could suggest all sorts of fish but you have to like them. Vieja heterospilus are slow growing and dont get too big. Cryptoheros (cons) are cool nanolutes, sajica, honduran red points, panamensis to name a few check out wetspots stock list they have a few.

I just had to rehome a aequidens metae love that fish if i were to try a pair it would be them (im partial though)

Would really love an ornatum but ive never kept one and im not sure if a 75 gal would be ok long term

Those are awesome! I never even really heard of Heterospilus before, they certainly are cool looking though. Its funny just before I refreshed this I was reading an old thread from years ago on MFK about heterospilus, these pictures are a lot more helpful though thats for sure.
I actually had a breeding pair of HRPs before, heres my old male. I actually had some platinum fry from the pairing. I would recommend them to anyone very cool fish.

I guess more than species I`m kind of wondering about what amounts of fish of certain sizes I could put in there, obviously nothing over a foot long. I`ve kept all kinds of cichlids before and never have had the Metae but I was able to keep diadema once, very similar to green terrors but a bit more laid back. still a bit aggressive though.

I have always wanted to grow out a pair of nics. would a 75g do ?

How were your hrps ? Mine was a little s.o.b

I had a pair in a 225 with a bunch of other cichlids. they kept to themselves and spawned often. They didn`t bother anyone and were essentially peaceful. Their blues rival Mbunas when they are spawning, there seems to be a few localities of HRP though, some look a lot more like convicts, mine were ghost white and blue. I have heard they are supposed to be mean but mine were perfectly fine.
