Hi everyone,
my first post here! I have a 75g tank with natural gravel that is redish in color, plenty of rocks to build caves and also some nice driftwood to work with. I have three small jewel cichlids I just got today (the tank has been running for over a year and is well established) I have two decent filters running on it (a penguin biowheel 350 and a topfin 60) which should easily be more than enough for this size tank.

I'm loooking for ideas of fish to add to the tank. The three jewels are only about 1"-1.5" and of course have not paired up since I only got them today. I plan on building quite a few caves with the rocks. My goal is to get as much variety in color and personality as I can into this 75g tank so I can get my girlfriend more interested (if she likes it I can get more ;) ) So I am not very concerned with them all being from the exact same place as I am with getting some nice color and fish that will get her more involved. I can always add more taniks later and make them region specific.

Also, I'm not running carbon in either filter, it was all removed when I had oscars. I've made my own filter material thats been working very well. its made from those puff things that people use in place of washcloths, not sure what they are called but its basically a fine plastic netting thats tied in a way that its shaped like a ball and people use them for bathing. I've untied them and I cram them down into the filters and they have been great. I just rinse them off every now and then and shove them right back in, much cheaper than buying replacement cartridges :)

I'm fairly new with jewels as well, but i just got 3 lifalilis- 1 x 2.5-3" female, 1 x 1.5" male, and one tiny 1 incher.

If you do some reading around you might find out about their temperament, and realize you have to be somewhat selective in what you put in, in terms of tank size and housing/caves.
Mongobay.com has "Hemichromis, Steatocranus, Tilapia, Synodontis, Polypterus, Distichodus, "Cichlasoma," Pimelodids, Loricarids (Plecos)" listed as suggested companions for your hemichromis.
Right now my 3 jewels are housed with 3 tiny(1.25") GTs that will someday have to be rehoused. For the time being its peaceful in the tank-we'll see. So, just read around and try to find out what kind of jewels you have. Good luck with your set up.
