I purchased a tank a couple months ago that came with this 8" CL and several large aggressive fish such as 2 oscars and a very aggressive jaguar. I left those 3 fish with the seller and brought home the CL. Since then I've purchased 4 more 7-7.5" CL's so he could be apart of a schoal. During that time I've had several tank issues to include a case of ich which I'm in the end stages of getting rid of. However, every since I've had him I have always noticed he breathes more rapid than the other CL's and he usually always has his mouth open which I have never seen in a CL and I've owned many in the past but never one this large. I am wondering if he has a possible genetic deformity, past injury prior to me having him, or is there some other underlying issue such as a disease of some sort I could possibly treat. He is more active than the others and is always the first out of hiding to eat come feeding time and eats just fine. One thing I do notice him do though is put his face right in front of one of the powerheads sometimes which I'm not sure is related or he just enjoys the current. The tank has plenty of filtration along with 2 powerheads with airlines running into them so there is plenty of aeration in the tank. Would appreciate any ideas as to what is going on. As you can see in the pic he is the only one so it's clearly only an issue with him which tells me it's not a water param issue.

It could be ich on his gills causing him to breath heavier or gill flukes... the mouth open is to get more water over his gills .
This has been going on for a couple months and was that way when I got him. None of the other fish had ich or any issues in his previous tank and I'm on day 8 of treating ich. All the other CL's are fine. How do you figure out if it's gill flukes?

Because you can not see a problem... and you wouldn't see it if it is in the gills. Something is causing him to breathe more rapidly... it is not your water if the other loaches are ok.

Gill flukes had cross my mind but I've been out of the hobby for awhile and just now getting back in it and have been bombarded with so many issues I'm losing my mind. A 125 coming apart at the seem, ich, and now this. Should I go ahead and treat for fluke and if so, recommended treatment?

FYI, I recently purchased Seachem Paraguard and Kanaplex. Not sure if anybody has had success treating with those?

I am really spit balling... do you mind if i move this to the disease forum and let some others chime in? Loaches can be sensitive to meds ( and me being a huge fan of cl) I would hate to see something go wrong.

Ya no problem at all. That's kinda why I wanted it on here because most don't understand the sensitivity of CL's but I think it being moved would get more response and more people can learn from it. I try to keep my posts to where other benefit and not just myself

I really like this stuff. I have used it for years and years and it works. It stinks and make the water cloudy, but it works and is all natural and safe for scale-less fish..
If your CL has gill flukes, that would explain the powerhead behavior.
