After finishing my 300 build I was stumped on what to do about a light fixture. Nobody manufactures an 8 foot fixture that I could just sit on top of the tank like I do with the Current USA fixture that I use on my 4 foot 90 gallon. I find the ability of being able to move the light around handy for maintenance and I wanted the 300 to be the same, but I certainly didn't want to use TWO 4 foot lights.
I finally decided to build a simple wooden box with 1x material and mount an 8 foot LED light inside that I bought at Home Depot. I also wired in a dimmer. I keep the light dimmed most of the time (the damn thing is BRIGHT) but when I really want to brighten things up, like during maintenance, I've got that ability.
I love the flexibility it gives me. I've got it standing 3/8'" off the top of the tank on four legs. I can slide it all the way to the back and it clears my tank covers and when I replace the covers I just slide it back into position.
