I just got an 8FTX2X2.... I was thinking about using it to try and breed a pair of peacock mantis shrimp..... Then today I am thinking hmmmm.... Aro, Tat, and AFT.
Silver aro.
I am not familiar at all with the Tat. I know I don't want to waste any $$ and/or time on a schomb. I like to buy babies and keep them for their life, The Armatus I found is gone. I am having problems finding another one. I do not see too much info about Tats anywhere. Info like size, temper, ect. Please any info on a Tat would be cool, and I will be trying to get an AFT. Not a GATF......Which one would you guys recommend.
I am not 100% sure what I will do yet, but I like to make sure I do my homework before I go and buy. Now is the time for education!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!! Need to know which spec. are available and which would live long, happy, and lovinglives together!!!

uhmm not sure if you want to have a HUGE tank for a peacock mantis shrimp...but i would go with that ones you stated aswell...:) as for Tat...not much info on them but i hear they don't live that long...or something...but just wait for more experienced keepers

tats-
up to 18 inches usually
not too aggressive, usually only towards silvery fish
can be kept together
grow pretty slow
sometimes very hard to get off live

i'd do a black aro,4 - 6 tats,3 vittatus atf,and some endlis.

Thx for the responses. I think I got a couple Armatus coming soon. I will try them with an Aro, and maybe one of the spec. of ATF. If aggression seems to high I will move one of them.
Yeah, I don't think I have the $$ to be throwing around to house a couple shrimp in an 8ft. aquarium to try and breed them when it has never been accomplished anyway. Sounds kinda "off" when I see myself type it out lol.

Then you might double think a pair of Armatus or anything that swims nid level. Armatus is the 2nd most aggressive Charicin behind the Amari.
I would go with a school of Tats (as no one has schooled a set for more than a yr... if that). Armatus is known to kill aros and ATF's. While they are young, you will get away for a lil but then bye bye to your population. Not worth the risk. JMO
Tat is the way top go if you plan to house other fish. For life, you might... might be able to get away with housing just one full grown VATF solo as they require a wide range of swiming for speed. My 11" GATF just bit a 7" pleco in half:screwy:. ATF are very aggressive

You can keep Tats for life in that ssize tank. Tats give you the all around in a Pred. Size, teeth, mild aggression, exotic... only thing they fall short is movement. They dont swim around that much.

So I vote for Tats, Aros, Bichirs and Chinese Perch:naughty: (just picked up a couple of these perches and they are B A D A R S E ! ! !)
and if you can (some states you cant) a Ray:naughty::naughty::naughty::naughty::naughty::naughty::headbang2:popcorn:

Your info on Tat is totally off. Tat is aggressive toward each other, although they can be kept together. I have four Tats that eat market shrimp, one of them even eats sinking Hikari Massivore pellets :WHOA: and I still have hard time to get the Armatus off live food. The grow rate on Tat is depend on how often you feed them. Practically, Tat has almost same personality/characteristic with Armatus. They may not grow as big as Armatus. Armatus grows fast when they under 8", and slow down considerably when they hit 8", while Tat grows gradually

Its all good guys. I am only ordering 2 and planning on keeping 1. They are only around 3" so I would assume their aggression should be minimal in an 8Ft tank. They will be the only things in there for awhile. Then I will add an Aro. To be honest I am not even sure if they are going to be Armatus yet they might be Tat. I am getting them from Rich with Infinite Aquatics.
Also this will be my first Armatus so i am a little nervous. :( I guess iwill make another quick thread to get a little help.

i would use that tank for the fish you suggested you could breed mantis shrimp in a smaller tank also i would go with a black aro they get smaller silver aros would need a wider tank eventually

Actually this is probably the smallest tank I could try and breed mantis in imo.
For now it will house 2 Armatus or Tats.I will see whats going to happen next.... I just want to make sure those to guys are ok first then I wil add a silver aro then possibly a ATF. have to see how the aggression will be later on and make sure I have a good back up plan. I should have the 10Ft. built by then. I hope.
