Good Afternoon,
I just had to share this with you all. Back in the winter - I got my hands on a unproven pair of 8 inch green Severums from a local pet shop. The Severums had been given to the shop as the previous owners could (or would) not look after them anymore.
I could tell they were clearly a male/female pair and decided on the spot in the store, that I wanted these fish - they would make a great breeding project for my fishroom (which I was still planning/building at the time).
Well, many months have passed and the pair were not interested in spawning at all, I tried changing water parameters, provide slate, clay plant pots etc. Nothing seem to work and I was starting to think that these guys would probably never breed and would be relocated to the 6ft-er in the living room.
For the past month, I have been boxing househole item into boxes ready for a house move (moving in with the girlf-we are buying a new house together! ;-p). The 8 inch green Severums decided that this was a brilliant time to spawn, this was 4 weeks. 1st week in June 2009.
On Saturday 4th July 2009 whilst doing my routine checks I disturbed the Severums spawning again on a large broken plant pot (same spawning site as prev month). The 4 week old fry from the 1st spawning are still with their parents.
So in a few days time, I am going to have two(2) batches of Green Severum fry - in the space of only 4 weeks!
Diet consists of dried egg, cichlid pellets and frozen cichlid food. (For those interested in their diet).
I have attached 2 photos of the fry and eggs (spawn site). in the photo you can clearly see a 4 week old fry resting on a plastic plant in the foreground - with the eggs in the background.
I am aware of the 'gunk' growing on the plastic plants - I plan to remove manually - but it is not effecting water quality and the fry seem to like nibbling at it now and then. lol ;-)
Here are the photos. Thanks for looking. Danny
