Hi guys i'm thinking of building an 8 m by 2 m by 2 m concrete aquarium but i have a few decisions that i cant seem to decide on my own , so i thought ill bring the discussion here where i'm sure ill get a lot of valuable inputs.

First issue id like to discuss is; should i do a full viewing window measuring roughly 7 m by 1.5 m by 1.5 m or should i divide them to 2 smaller viewing windows? and will a 38 cm laminated glass
(19 mm + 19 mm) be strong enough to handle the water pressure?

Second issue id like to know is how many layers of waterproof coating should i do?

Third issue is filtration, anybody has any experience with filtration for such size tank? about 8000 gallons?

Thanks in advance guys, i will be waiting for your inputs.

Laminated glass made with 2x same thickness glass would be around 80% as strong as a comparable monolithic glass.

21 ft x 5 ft ( water column ht ) would give you a SF of 1.32

If you reduce water column to 4.75 ft then the SF bumps up to 1.54.

Now 10.5 ft x4.75 Sf = 1.63.

The difference betwen both is marginal , however depending on availability of the size go for what you like.

I would however reduce the glass hieght to 4.25 or 4 ft ( sf 2.2++ , deflection 0.9mm).

the higher your tank is the more pressure you will have......a tank that big, you will have to talk to a pro. at a glass shop or your looking at a mess......I had a 3 ft high glass tank with 1/2 inch thickness and it bowed so much that I knew it would break....luckily I sold it to a guy that had reptiles....

so heres the deal i went to a proffesional glass seller and he told me that a laminated glass 3.8cm thick (19+19) will do the job. lm planning to join 2 sheets of 4m by 2m using silicon. according to him, it should be strong enough. what do you guys think? anybody can share the link to the glass thickness calculator?

From all the tank I have seen they are much thicker, I would think you would need a thicker pane of glass but talk to a couple differnt glass places and see what the general overall take is on it.

smaller windows will mean less pressure across the seams (smaller window= more surface area for pressure spread over)

Sealant, if you use water proof concrete I would still give it 2 coatings of sealer. Biolab failed because oxygen was being absorbed into the concrete.

Filtration, I would go a few ways here, look into Anoxic filtration http://www.mankysanke.co.uk/html/anoxic_filtration.html
Without telling what you plan on stock depends, but tradition koi set ups (bottom drains, skimmers seems appropriate)

8k water quite a bit, what are you aiming for turnover 2x, 4x, 10x? You are looking for advice, but it doesn't seem like you have done your homework yet...

Bump for an Indonesian Project!

There are a lot of giys in here who know exactly the answres the OP needs, beyond the awesome glass calculations alteady contained above.
