OK, my 75 gallon finally sprung a leak so had to get an 80gal off of craigslist in a hurry. Built the stand, canopy, and internal filtration today, started at 5 a.m. and just now got it all set up. The internal filter is perfectly quiet, and i mean i can sit right beside the tank and can't hear anything at all, that was the main reason for building the filter, plus i wanted the tank flush with the wall, so couldn't use the HOBs. All the filter is, is two pieces of 4" abs pipe, capped the bottom of both, drilled a hole in the bottom side of both pipes the same size as my vinyl hose, and drilled a bunch of holes in the top sides of the pipes for water to enter. Connect both pipes together at the bottom using the vinyl hose and a "T" barb with another piece of hose going to a powerhead. filled both 4" pipes with scrubbies and some large ceramic rings with a piece of poly filter pad on top of each about an inch or so below the holes, i ran an airstone to the bottom of both pipes to allow more o2, but that's kinda optional. and the stand and canopy are a little rough, but i had to get this tank done today, don't have room for the spare 150gal i have and my red devil was living in a rubbermaid container since yesterday, and the only tank i could find was this one and it was tank only, been a long day.

i just needed something quiet in this room, don't normally mind the slight buzz of my fx5s, but this is my tv room and the tank is right beside the couch, plus the powerhead is pushing prolly around 340 gph, rated at 480gph, but doubt it after sucking through the scrubbies.

have you done anything like this before? Im curious to see how well this does over time. Its a great design if it works well.

i"ve done similar, but they were smaller scale and completely submerged, they worked great, but were a pain to clean, this one is much much easier to clean, and i don't mind how it looks in the tank.

Looks great :headbang2

How is it easier to clean?
If you turn the air on to the bottom, how will you keep the scrubbies and filter pad from floating up out?

just easier to clean because the fully submerged one had to be removed from the tank, this one i can just reach in and take the filter pads out and rinse in tank water and put right back in, as far as the scrubbies floating, i have a hole dirlled through the top of each pipe and a piece if rigid airline stuck across each pipe through the whole, stops everything from coming up.

yea I think this is going to get built in the next day or so for my 125. Thanks for the inspiration.
