Hi All

I have done it, placed a order for my new tank, 84x36x24  Cant wait to get it. Now while I wait I have a problem, Filtration. I have got a 45 Gal I am going to use for a sump picture underneath. Please if any body has got any idea feel free. Now I am looking to get a few times filtration maybe in the region of 10 times??? Is this enough? Also I am looking at this sort of pump

http://www.pondsuperstores.com/products/Fish-Mate-22000-Pond-Pump.html

will this be enough? Please any advice as this will be my biggest tank yet. oh I forgot the heaters go in the last compartment with pump, and tht is a filter sock at the staart

I would just use pond matrix for all your bio and floss and carbon like matrix carbon or chemipure thats waht I did and works great ,easy to use and setup is simple but get the job gets done w an Eheim pump returning water to tank.

45g is not what I would consider large enough to house the filtration media and safely accommodate the possibility of a power outage/backfill. I usually try for ~1/4 to 1/3 tank size. In that scenario, I wouldn't go smaller than a 75g. Also, I would look into a filter sock and Japanese style ceramic media filtration system. The baffles are *highly* overrated. The more water you circulate through your system, the more water goes over and through your media. Forcing it through baffles is fun as a project, but in reality, it's really not necessary. It makes the sump harder to clean, and harder to get in and out of. I have a custom 125g sump on my 375g and while it has a couple of chambers and bubble traps, it's hardly restrictive in the design.

I agree with Clay( and thanks for the help with mine!!)

75 gallon sump minimum, socks, skip the baffles....

I just recently finished a 86x24x30 build with a 75 gallon sump. Thread in my sig

Good luck and congrats on the new tank!

Same here I got a 75g sump for my 300 and also went with the dual 200 micron filter socks. Though might be considering getting dual 100's or one 50 micron.

X4. Nix the baffles and just run ceramic media and filter socks.

I think the coarse to fine filter pads will cause a bit of problems in the long run with clogging up and not being to convienient to access under the sock. I dont know how your drain is going to run but I would just set up 2 filter socks and ditch the foam blocks

Keep it simple either a cheap 100g tank on craigslist or pickup a stock tank for a sump, load it with pond matrix, ceramic rings, heaters and your pump and have it all go through a pair of filter socks and you will b golden.

KISS - Keep it simple err stupid, yeah that's it lol

I agree - the filter socks should be the only thing in your set up that needs maintenance. Everything else should be high flow bio-balls or some other kind of media that wont clog. The larger the sump the better. Minimum you want enough extra room in the sump to hold the extra water from a power outage or pump issues.

Oh yeah - you need some pictures too :D
