i am hoping to get a new tank soon with an 8x2 foot print and think i will build the stand myself. Just wondering what is better/cheaper/lighter to make it out of timber or metal???? If metal i plan on covering the out side of the stand with timber anyway. The tank will hold about 900 liters of water so it needs to be pretty strong once complete.
If anyone can provide advice, plans tips or links to to other threads where other membera have done something similar that would be great.
thanks

Wood will most likely be cheaper unless you have access to it at decent pricing. Either one will hold a tank just fine.

Here's a great design to go by.

I built a stand for a tank with the same footprint. I used 2" thick oak for the front and back and plywood for the shorter sides. I was able to put drawers in it.. that's is very handy.

Metal will work too.

Cost.. it depends on what tools you have and your skill level.
If you are going to just cover your metal stand with wood, you'd probably be better off just building the base out of wood as well. It will be a lot easier to add an attractive wood skin to a wood base.
