Electric Blue Acaras. They can be pricey as far as common cichlids, but show a lot of color, and tend to be peaceful.

Why not go 8x3x2 and go with rays? Since you are having it built.

I agree with preacher, dont limit yourself with the 2' width, if possible go 3' so it opens a lot more options in the future for you... especially since you got the 8' legth...

i see what you are all saying but my living room is 10ft wide and after 10 yeas with the wife she has finally given in to a big tank i have a budget to work to and a time limit as she wants the whole room done before are baby arrives so as you can imagine the room is limited on space for what she wants from the room but on the other hand i am planning a fish room in my garden so thats were i was thinking i could build a bigger tank in time. i was thinking some south american something impressive as the kids love the size of oscars dovii jags but i see that there could be some real problems with these and also my current stock

That's why EBA would be good, colour, size and personality :)

You can do a whole lot with a tank that size, cichlid wise anyway. How is your water? If you have a slightly lower pH I'd suggest to get a Hoplarchus Psittacus, maybe a couple. With some more severums, blue (I like the regular blues better than the fake electric) and yellow acara, chocolate cichlid. A big colorful South American tank would be awesome.

So many choices. For me I would do a nice group of geophagus and loach tank topped with giant danios and tiger barbs. Wait I'm already doing that. Just need your tank

I would do a wild oscar and more severums of all different types, maybe a bumblebee oscar?
